Colbert Testifies to Congress

Watch the video (linked to youtube, so will be unable to view at school). Do you agree with Colbert's testimony? Do you think he made a mockery of the system by testifying in his Colbert report comedian character?

  1. I do agree in his statement that Americans won’t do such jobs because they think that this type of work is degrading, which is absurd because many Americans work retail including myself and that field is terrible. If the entire country realized what the immigrants do for us then maybe there could be hope in the near future for Americans. I am an American but I can still see that there is a need for cheap immigrant labor and there will always be a need. I have mowed other people grass for ten years with my father and it feel good because you have this sense of accomplishment and you now that you made a difference in the world somewhere somehow. Did Colbert make a mockery at congress, I would say no on a couple of grounds. News is news and frankly for the most part boring. Only people who are really concerned with the world and people who have to read for a grade actually keep up with the mainstream news broadcast. Stewart and Colbert have made the news more approachable to younger audiences so that they can get into the fray. By having Colbert do this, he is reaching out to younger people so that they can get informed. He did a great service to the congress because he brought an issue that many people knew already about but gave new insight to the faction of it. USA Number 1

  2. I do agree with the fact that many Americans, including Colbert himself, would not want to work on farms. The work is long, tedious, and tiring, especially under the sweltering heat. Not only that, but like Nick said, it is degrading. As the majority of people live in urbanized cities, many do not even dare think of working at such "uncivilized" places like farms. I don't agree with Colbert's testimony though, because although many Americans don't realize it, we need immigrants to do the jobs that we don't want to do. These immigrant workers work "behind the scenes," working to keep the economy going, yet getting paid minimally. I would say that Colbert did make a mockery of Congress because he could have said what he wanted to say in a different way, but he chose not to. If he didn't make a mockery, that would be very unlike him. It is as if people already expect him to make a mockery. He knows because of his fame he can bring attention to the subject, which is what he aimed to do. But by bringing attention to this subject, he makes a mockery out of Congress.

  3. I agree with Colberts testimony. Americans are not willing to do farm work or work in the hot sun as an illegal would. Perhaps many illegal persons do not want to do this kind of jobs as well, but they are in need to because most cannot get better jobs and need money. Immigrants are the ones doing all the labor in this country, why is congress against them? Without immigrants doing this types of job the U.S agriculture would go down as a failure because americans will hesistate and will not work in farms. Colberts testimony although offensive, it is bringing attention to the U.S congress as well as americans. He is using sarcasm and comedy to illustrate this issue, but he is right and is making a big point! The Immigrants should be allowed in this country. Truth to the matter let illegal people in the U.S yes they will do immigrant work at first, but they will progress at the end and have better jobs. By the Year 2050 Hispanics will take over this country. So yes colbert is right immigrants do hard work they suffer and have no type of rights, the least they can do is make it llegal to give them visas to work. Colbert is mocking congress because he is being sarcastic and wanted to laugh. He used his fame as a comedian in comedy central, to bring this issue out. Me being a hispanic seeing the good side and bad side of his testimony what i can say is way to go Colbert.!

  4. All i have to say is that I half agree with it because is so true that almost no american would actually go in the farms n do all the farm work under the burning sun,no american would not be able to work from sunrise to sunset, and am sorry if am offending someone but I say this because is true here in the u.s we use to another life.People here are too preppy to selfish to actually get down and dirty in a field. And about the imigrants that do thid job in my opinion i say they deserve better rights than these America is a rases country and they dont appreasiate what these people come and do ,they dont come to hurt the country we actually help.
