The cartoon is trying to draw a connection between the US economy and the Chilean miners. In the cartoon, Obama is saying that our economy is in deep hole, and like the miners, it is currently being rescued with everyone's massive efforts. The miners waited nearly 70 days before they were rescued and made a pact that no one would benefit unless everyone benefited, showing much gratitude for their escape from the mine. On the other hand, the United States' major banks that were rescued by the government / US taxpayer's money never expressed any gratitude or said thanks. The cartoon is trying to suggest that America could be better off. And that the elections coming up this November, Americans should think wisely before choosing who to vote for, perhaps by being a "swing voter" as well as paying attention to those "thirty-second spots."
This comic is making fun of our economy, or actually the lack of. The miners were trapped in there for more than 60 days yet there government was able to rescue them, before they died. Obama wants to recruit them because with the way our economy is going there will be deaths. If the Chilean government could help their miners out of a hole they could help us out too. It is just satire toward our economy. However there is hope in this world and the harbingers of this hope are us. We have the power to change the way that Obama is ruining this country. This cartoon basically ilustrates how Obama is comparing the economy crisis to the crisis of the traped miners. People knew it was going to take time and hard work to come up with a strategy to rescue the minners, as it is to make the economy better. The miners family didn't loose hope of seeing their relatives safe and sound, as Obama doesn't loose hope of making this economy better. Obama states in hes presidential speech how experts from across the political spectrum warned that if we did not act, we might face a second depression. So they acted immediately and one year later, the worst of the storm has passed. Families, the technical crew and the president of Chile thought the same. If they didn't act as fast as possibles they would had faced a disaster and the miners wouldn't had survive. It took time to rescue the miners but at the end it was success! It can also happen with the economy. During the rescue of the miners what was so outstanding was the spirit of the village that started growing as the days of the rescue came closer. Obama says in he's presidential speech, "[ It is because this spirit - this great decency and great strenght - that i have never been more hopeful about America's future that i am tonight.. We do not give up. We do not quit." Obama beleives there will be a sastisfactory sucess to the economy depression..
